Introduction to the BMAT Assessment

The British Medical Association (BMA) has called for an end to the use of the BioMedical Admissions Test (BMAT) as an assessment for medical school applicants. The BMA is concerned that the BMAT is unfairly biased against certain groups of students, and that it does not accurately predict success in medical school. The BMA has urged the government to review the use of the BMAT and to consider alternative methods of assessment.

Look for a course that offers comprehensive coverage of the material, plenty of practice questions, and detailed answer explanations. A BMAT preparation course can help you get the score you need to get into your dream school.

While there is no one-size-fits-all approach to studying for the BMAT, a prep course can give you the structure and support you need to succeed.

What is the BMAT assessment?

The Biomedical Admissions Test (BMAT) is an assessment used by several universities as part of their admissions process for certain undergraduate courses, mostly in the biomedical and health sciences.

The test is designed to assess scientific aptitude and problem-solving abilities and is therefore different in nature to conventional school or college exams. It is a 2-hour written test, typically taken in November (before applications are made) by students who are applying to study medicine, veterinary medicine or related courses at university the following year.

BMAT score reports are sent out to applicants and their chosen universities in early December. The report contains scaled scores for each section of the test as well as an overall score, which universities use alongside other information such as GCSE results, predicted A-level grades and personal statements when making their offers.

There are three sections in the BMAT: Section 1 – Aptitude and Skills; Section 2 – Writing Task; Section 3 – Scientific Knowledge and Applications. The first two sections consist of multiple-choice questions while the third section requires candidates to write a short essay on a given topic. Candidates have one hour to complete Sections 1 and 2, and 30 minutes for Section 3.

Why is the bmat assessment important?

BMAT is important because it is an entrance examination for certain medical schools. The British Medical Association has developed it to help identify applicants with the potential to succeed in a demanding medical degree.

The test comprises three sections:

Section 1: Aptitude and Skills tests problem-solving, critical thinking and data analysis skills.

Section 2: Scientific Knowledge and Applications tests knowledge of scientific principles relevant to medicine, and the application of these principles.

Section 3: The writing Test assesses writing ability, argument construction and critical thinking through a short essay.

How can I prepare for the BMAT assessment?

The BMAT is a 3-hour test taken on paper. It is divided into three sections: Section 1 tests scientific knowledge and skills; Section 2 tests mathematical skills and understanding; and Section 3 tests writing ability and critical thinking.

To prepare for the BMAT, you should:

1) Familiarise yourself with the format of the test by looking at example questions and practising under timed conditions.

2) Make sure you understand the types of questions that will be asked in each section and practice answering them.

3) Develop your speed and accuracy in solving mathematical problems.

4) Practice writing essays under timed conditions so that you are able to organise your thoughts quickly and clearly.

What are the benefits of taking the BMAT assessment?

The BMAT is an abbreviation for the BioMedical Admissions Test. It is a subject-specific admissions test for applicants to certain medicine, veterinary medicine/science and related courses at universities in the United Kingdom, Singapore and Croatia.

The aim of the BMAT is to help identify which applicants have the potential to succeed in their chosen course. The test does this by measuring aptitude (ability) and skills that are important for study in the biomedical and health sciences.

You will have to register to take the BMAT in advance. The test costs £62 (or £31 if you’re eligible for a fee waiver). You can take the BMAT at any of our test centres around the world on either 3 or 4 October 2020.
