With the proliferation of online financial independence merchant sites (95% of which are fake), you’ve probably wondered how to make money with a website. It is a handsome prospect to see bloggers, influencers, Instagrammers, and other YouTubers get there so “easily.” But as the saying goes: Rome wasn’t built in a day. Here are 10 tips for making money with your website (I didn’t say “get rich,” let’s be clear 🙂
1. Find a concept that pays off\
Making a website is good, but making an attractive website is better! Who wants to see a site listing the reproductive performance of whelks in the North Atlantic for the past 50 years? Apart from biologists or ecological anglers, I do not see.
The ideal way to earn money is to find an exciting and helpful theme for you and your visitors. For you, to motivate you to supply the site with content. For your visitors, so that they come to see your site. If in addition, you bring an idea or an original concept, it’s banked! And who says more visitors, says more traffic and therefore more possibilities of making a financial profit from your site.
2. Post original content regularly
This stems from the previous point: you must regularly provide your website with engaging, high-quality, and original content. Don’t try to copy the content of a known site, even in a foreign language:
- Your visitors will see it.
- Search engines will see it.
- It will punish you for making money.
With topics that interest you and appeal to you, you should be able to find ideas for articles and content to publish efficiently. You can also try to diversify the content types in terms of content: adding video creations to articles, rich text articles, and infographics… everything that will change the joy of reading for your readers. This will make them want to come back to your website. As mentioned earlier, more visitors = more profit.
3. Optimize SEO
Having an interesting and lively site is good, but it’s not enough. If no one knows your site exists, no one will come to see it. Being on the 53rd page of the search engines will bring you very little traffic (in fact, it brings you NO traffic, Internet users do not navigate further than the 3rd page of the search results and do not necessarily scroll to the footer and more, imagine …).
The basics of SEO are therefore essential to help increase the results of search engines and therefore to earn money. Focus on one or more main keywords related to your central theme. Produce SEO-friendly, well-tagged, and semantically correct content. Respect the main SEO recommendations, and everything should be fine for you: your site should become more “findable” and therefore visited.
4. Display advertisements
Once your website is regularly visited and relatively well known, you can slowly start introducing advertisements on your website to earn money. They can take different forms: vertical or horizontal banners, pop-ups, pop-ins, advertisements integrated into your textual content, etc.
The best-known advertising network (and the simplest technically) remains, in my opinion, Google Adsense. You can integrate and distribute ad units on your website very easily and very quickly by adding two or three pieces of code provided by Google. The revenue generated is based on the number of views and clicks on these advertisements, and more visitors = more profits.
5. Publish sponsored articles
Once your website is a little better known and has been present for several months on the internet, you may have the opportunity to be contacted to publish so-called “sponsored” content. These are articles you are paid to publish on your website and which make you money. Either they are provided written by the “sponsor,” or you take care of the writing according to the brief provided. This can bring you several tens or hundreds of euros, depending on what you have negotiated and especially depending on the popularity of your website.
6. Sell affiliate products
There, we begin to get into remuneration techniques that are a little more complex to put in place and will require a reflection before implementing this kind of solution to earn money.
Selling affiliate products is simple on paper: offering for sale products or content designed by other people to receive a certain percentage of each sale. A bit like a commercial. But to sell something, you have to be able to attract customers and interest them, and that’s not always easy.
7. Create an online store
Another solution to earn money requires preparation, which is not necessarily profitable: the creation of an online store. This can be a shop where you sell your products and creations, services, or even products and services provided by a third party (in dropshipping, for example).
Technically, it takes some effort to create and set up the store and select the relevant and adequate products for your visitors. This is not the right solution for everyone and all websites. But when it’s done well, it can bring in some precious euros.
8. Offer a subscription to a paid service
A little in the same line as the previous point to earn money: offering a subscription to a paid service requires preparation and is a bit “double or nothing”. You have to prepare well what you want to offer as a subscription, and above all, it has to be something that evolves and is renewed over time.
To avoid boring subscribers and provide them with added value justifying their subscription. Would you like to pay to download a poor PDF file that will never be updated and bring you nothing else? In this case, a single payment is sufficient. For example, the online training platform OpenClassrooms offers monthly subscriptions for its diploma courses.
On the contrary, offering new or regularly updated content will justify the subscription, and its quality will justify its price. By subscription, you can offer access to training content, such as videos or online courses, and full access to articles and information files on restricted display for non-subscribers.
9. Offer visitors to make donations
Based on the generosity and altruism of your visitors, this solution to earn money depends on the will of your visitors and how you retain them. You can’t force them to give you a gift, but by pampering them and providing them with quality content and services, you can encourage them to thank you and reward you with a donation, which is ideal for winning money.
You can use, for example, Paypal, Paylib, or any other means of online payment to receive donations. Wishlists can also be used and made available to your visitors to reward you. Therefore, they will choose a gift from the list you offer and participate in its financing or purchase—another way to reward themselves financially.
10. Sell your website
Ultimate and definitive, this solution only works once per website, as you can imagine. Selling your website can be very profitable, provided that your site is popular, attractive, lively, and sold to the right person. When you sell your website, you sell the domain name and the site with all the content you have worked so hard to produce with the sweat of your hands, your popularity, and your audience or community.
It’s a step that needs to be thought about for a long time to avoid having any regrets afterward. For some, it will be a page that turns to start a new project (and why not another website). It will be the end of the digital adventure on the internet for others. It is an effective way to quickly earn a few thousand euros, rewards for long work.
Well, I hope this long list will help you search for the fruition of your website. I do not guarantee that each of these proposals will work every time, you will have to do a little work behind it, but at least it gives you some leads and objectives to follow to guide you towards success.
